Dust and Pollen Control:

HEALTH ENHANCED ENVIRONMENT:
This factor is addressed is this earlier page: LAND

COMMERCIALIZED - INDUSTRIALIZED:
Industrialized and business segregated regions vary widely because of differing zoning regulations, different degrees of enforcement of the regulations, and differences in the social concern of the business or property owners.

For the health conscious and hypersensitive person, comercialized and industrialized areas sometimes, yet rarely, provide a positive environment. These may include school, manufacturing, retail business, and office building premises. If the operations located in the region do not expel noxious gases and fumes, nor airbourne particulates, nor promote the use of toxic insecticide-fungicide-pesticides on their lawns and shrubs --- their environment may provide a health oasis for the employee and visitor. In specialized and infrequent circumstances, homeless individuals may reside on the premises with a degree of proactivity, precaution, and tolerance.

For 6 months during 1997-1998, I lived in the office I was working at. The company I was employed by was in the quandary of raising monies to start a new company and required my assistance to develop an extensive business plan, design and code an internet website, provide staff training, redress problems in the parent company, and pull together the planning for a major electronic database. A local company, promoting itself as a business investment management service, had promised delivery of funding within a set time period in exchange for service fees. They failed to deliver on time.

I believed in the proposed business concept and its potential to benefit the community by innovating an industry changing service of increasing demand. A point was reached where I could no longer be paid until the financing was raised. At first, delays and promises from the management company suggested that financing would be finalized within a few weeks. Leaving a job which could be viable at any time seemed irresponsible. The work was demanding yet greatly rewarding. The social and cultural benefits were practical and guaranteed to follow from work, commitment, and adequate seed money financing.

The business was located at a distance from where I shared an apartment. As the weeks continued into the midst of winter in southern Ontario, Canada, commuting times became unreliable and costly for a limited income. Public transportation after a late evening hour became erratic with none continuing after 11:00 PM. Increasingly, there became an urgency to have more and more of the planning and paperwork completed so that the Request for Financing Proposals could become more and more attracive to a prospective investor. Work hours extended later and later with dashes through the cold, wind, and snow becoming increasingly rushed and final buses nearly missed. When enough work was completed, the financial resources would hopefully be found.

The financial management company was revealed as fraudulent.
It frequently took the last dollars of its enterprising clients only to make some minimal efforts of presentation to banks and other institutions. The company failed would usually become suitably discouraged and with the owners financially distressed and depressed, fade away without complaint. Our company president revealed the scam to the police, mass media, and business organizations. Our choice now became a rush to the open-doors stage with none of the development capital usually required. To continue, for me, personal expenses had to be minimized and personal effort maximized.

FILTRATION UNITS:

PAINTS and FINISHES:
Throughout the 1990s and more recently, paints and finishes have expanded in numbers of applications, specialization for different environments, and degree of toxicity of application, drying, curing, and longevity. Very healthful ingasing paints were made available during the late 1980's and early 1990's but were lost to the market for lack of adequate marketing and publicity efforts. Quality products can be made, and fail in the market --- sometimes for lack of investment; other times for the presence of powerful competition. New options are always being developed. Consider the possibilities. Then investigate the current availabilities and evaluate according to health, cost, and coverage elements.

Silicate Dispersion Paints:
Silicate Paint is SOLVENT-FREE
Silicate Paint is completely odourless within 1-2 days after painting
Silicate Paint is over 97 % mineral-source ingredients in a water base
All paint ingredients are available in abundance( water, quartz sand, potash, lime, silicate minerals )

The extraordinary durability reduces the overall raw materials usage of paint and helps to save resources.

Silicate Paint is by nature antimicrobial and does not require the use of fungicides.

Silicate Paint acts fire-retardant, since it is not combustible at any temperature

What is a Silicate Dispersion Paint:
The paint binder is a potassium silicate dissolved in water, which is also known as “waterglass”. This term describes it well, since it is a liquid form of glass which petrifies when it is allowed to react chemically with lime. This fact makes Silicate Paint the perfect coating for all mineral-based surfaces, especially those containing lime, such as concrete and lime & cement plaster.

On those surfaces it can chemically bond with the surface and, since it lets water-vapours pass through, there is no risk that it could ever blister or peel. Besides the binder and water, Eco-House Silicate Dispersion Paint contains as major ingredients ground lime stone, silicate fillers and mineral-source pigments, such as titanium dioxide (natural anti-microbial when exposed to light), iron oxides and various earthen pigments.

Where to use Silicate Dispersion Paints:
Obviously the ideal surfaces are new concrete and lime & cement plaster surfaces on interior and exterior walls. But also other surfaces are acceptable as long as they are rigid, clean and somewhat absorbent, for instance, masonry surfaces, concrete blocks and rigid drywall.

Unsuitable substrates are wood, metal and any flexible surface. The full benefit of the Silicate Paint can only be reached, if the paint has a direct contact with the mineral surface, this means all previous paint coats and oily residues from concrete additives have to go completely before painting.

Natural Wood Finishes include these:

  • Light Linseed Primer Oil,
The primary purpose for Eco-House Light Linseed Primer Oil is its use as a wood conditioner prior to finish treatments with a wax or a resin & oil finish. It helps coloured oil-based stains to penetrate the wood evenly, enhances the look of the wood grain and is more economical when saturating porous wood for optimal protection.
Ingredients : Light purified linseed oil, # 115 Eco-House Citrus Thinner, linseed standoil, leadfree dryers (cobalt & zirconium octoates), herbal essential oils.

  • Tree Resin & Oil Wood Finish,
This Resin & Oil finish is designed for use on softwood floors, furniture and other interior architectural woodwork. It penetrates into the wood like a Danish Oil, its resin content hardens the surface from the inside, making it water-repellent and easy to clean. Use on interior wood, cork, porous stone, brick and terra cotta surfaces. Deep penetrating vegetable oil & tree resin blend, provides an elastic, breathable protective coating. Water-resistent and surface-hardening. Enriches natural wood grain and does not blister or peel. Food-safe. Easy to refinish by applying additional coat after a light sanding.
Ingredients : Linseed standoil, pine resin ester, purified linseed oil, # 115 Citrus Thinner, microwax, lead-free driers ( cobalt, zirconium, calcium octoates ), rosemary oil.

  • Utah Woodsafe™,
Utah WoodSafe is a dark-brown outdoor woodfinish for use on wooden fences, fence posts, barns, hotbeds, coldframe and greenhouse structures. Items that will be touched by clothing in its normal use, should received a final clear coat with # 270 Hardwood Oil.
Ingredients : natural gilsonite mineral, linseed standoil, chinese wood oil, purified linseed oil, pine resin ester, microwax, orange terpene, # 115 Citrus Thinner, lead-free driers ( cobalt, zirconium, calcium octoates ), rosemary oil

  • Carnauba Floor Wax,
Carnauba Floor Wax is a fine protective surface finish for interior wood, natural stone, terra cotta and unglazed tiles. Apply thin coats preferably on smooth surfaces and parallel with the wood grain. Avoid wax build-ups in cavities and cracks. Ideal for furniture and average- use floors. Water-resistant, but do not use on frequently wet areas.
Ingredients : beeswax, carnauba wax, refined linseed oil, damar varnish, rosemary oil, # 115 Xtra Mild Citrus Thinner.

  • Liquid Beeswax Interior Wood Finish,
Eco-House Liquid Beeswax Wood Finish yields a very fine, anti-static finish on interior wood, cork, natural stone and linoleum surfaces. Its use is only practical on smooth finished surfaces. Ideal on fine furniture and architectural woodwork, which is not exposed to moisture.
Ingredients : beeswax, shellac wax, carnauba wax, clay, # 115 Xtra Mild Citrus Thinner.

  • PoliShine™ Natural Furniture Polish,
POLISHINE Furniture Polish cleans and restores surfaces on oiled or varnished wood items from fine furniture to wainscoting and interior logwalls. Also suitable for maintenance of food-safe wood items such as cutting boards and salad bowls. Dry to touch within 1-2 hrs after application. Do not use on waxed surfaces
Ingredients: # 115 Citrus Thinner, linseed oil, Turkey red oil, damar resin, rosemary oil.

The above is a selection of currently (2004) available high quality finishes, This can be a starting, reference, or end point for your considerations. Natural finishes may take longer to apply and to dry than more chemically formulated materials. Personal preference often suggests an appreciation of greater quality or beauty of color and exposure of the grain or appearance of the original base material.
