What exactly do antihistamines do?

Antihistamines reduce allergy symptoms by blocking the action of the histamine. These can be very effective, but all of the over-the-counter antihistamines cause some change in kids' levels of alertness. Most of the time, they produce drowsiness in children (which can be quite welcome -- especially at night), but around 5% of kids act hyper instead.

Of far greater concern is the effect of over-the-counter antihistamines on thinking and learning. We know that kids who are experiencing allergy symptoms don't think or learn or remember as well as kids who are feeling well (Annals of Allergy, Aug 1993). Careful studies have now been performed to determine whether this reduction in learning ability could be reversed by using over-the-counter antihistamines to relieve the allergy symptoms.

The surprising results were that even though kids felt better on the antihistamines, their learning abilities were even worse than with no treatment (Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, Mar 1996). They’re learning and mental agility is reduced whether or not they are drowsy.

Nasalcrom is an exciting, new, over-the-counter allergy medicine that is more effective and far safer than either decongestants or antihistamines. Nasalcrom is a nasal spray that creates a protective barrier around the allergy cells in the nose so that pollen, mold, dust, and animal dander can't stick to them. It stops the allergic response before it starts--without causing any drowsiness, irritability, or decreased learning. It doesn't reverse allergy symptoms that are already present, but prevents new allergen exposures from causing symptoms. Unlike decongestant nasal sprays, this gentle medicine can be used for weeks or months at a time with no fear of rebound effects or addiction.

Lung Health, Nitric Oxide, Immune Response,Lungs, Breathing,
Healthy lungs, easy breathing, natural anti-histamine.

Research shows that elevated levels of the free radical, nitric oxide (sometimes referred to as "NO"), appear to contribute to a number of seemingly different disorders that all have a common element of abnormal immune or inflammatory responses.

Studies of asthma and other inflammatory disorders have all demonstrated elevated levels of nitric oxide synthesis. Asthmatics exhale significantly higher levels of nitric oxide and type II nitric oxide synthase (also known as "NOS") expression is increased in biopsy specimens from asthmatics. ...

The body releases histamine in an attempt to fight the allergen and it is the histamine that triggers the symptoms common to allergies: inflammation, sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes.

Flavay™ (US$ 48.75-78.00 / 60-120 capsules)
can significantly scavenge nitric oxide radicals
.
However, as we'll discuss next, your body needs a certain amount of nitric oxide in order to maintain good health. Nitric oxide is paradoxical. It can both mediate normal physiological functions and it can be highly toxic. Nitric oxide can act as an anti-inflammatory under normal health conditions, but it can have the opposite effect and cause more inflammation to an already inflamed area when overproduced. The key, therefore, is to maintain the optimum balance of this double-edged sword, nitric oxide.

When the immune system's cytokines activate macrophages (the white blood cells capable of gobbling up invading viruses and bacteria), the macrophages produce large amounts of nitric oxide in the course of battle. Nitric oxide is a colorless gas produced by many different cells in the body that, depending on the situation, can be very good or very bad.

Nitric oxide plays several important roles in the body:

  • Nitric oxide is an important signaling molecule that turns genes on and off.

  • By controlling the muscular tone of blood vessels, nitric oxide regulates the circulation and normalizes blood flow.

  • Nitric oxide modulates communication between brain cells and is instrumental in helping us concentrate and learn new information, and also in maintaining memory.

  • When produced by immune cells, nitric oxide fights infection, kills tumor cells and promotes wound healing.

  • Nitric oxide is essential for perceiving pleasure and pain, and it helps translate sexual excitement into penile erections.

  • Nitric oxide aids in digestion of food by helping to control gastric movements.

But nitric oxide can be very destructive under other circumstances:

  • Nitric oxide restricts blood flow.
  • When produced in excess by immune cells, nitric oxide can trigger chronic inflammation, which can cause asthma, arthritis, colitis, inflammatory bowel disease and possibly cancer.

  • Nitric oxide promotes production of more free radicals.

  • In the brain, nitric oxide can hamper mental function and cause memory loss and brain aging.

The real trouble starts when nitric oxide encounters the superoxide free radical and becomes peroxynitrate, which destroys antioxidants like glutathione, vitamin E and common flavonoids, and damages proteins in the body. The good news is that Flavay™ scavenges peroxynitrate and has a remarkable modulatory effect on nitric oxide—helping to maintain optimal levels in the body and neutralizing this free radical where it does harm. ...

"[A] method for preventing and fighting the harmful biological effects of free radicals in the organism of warm blooded animals and more especially human beings, namely cerebral involution, hypoxia following atherosclerosis, cardiac or cerebral infarction, tumour promotion, inflammation, ischaemia, alterations of the synovial liquid, collagen degradation, among others. The method consists in administering to said animals and especially to human beings an amount, efficient against said effects, of a plant extract with a proanthocyanidins content which has a radical scavenger effect"—Dr. Jack Masquelier, U.S. Patent No. 4,698,360.

Cetyl Myristoleate: A Unique Natural Compound, ....
Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients
by Dr. Charles Cochran and Dr. Raymond Dent

... Cetyl myristoleate was discovered and isolated by one person, working alone, on a quest to find a cure for arthritis. Harry W. Diehl, while employed by the National Institute of Arthritis, Metabolism, and Digestive Diseases, specialized in sugar chemistry. ...

Cetyl myristoleate is now known to exist in sperm whale oil and in a small gland in the male beaver. At this time no other sources in nature are known to contain cetyl myristoleate. While the first amounts of cetyl myristoleate for experimentation were extracted from mice, Diehl quickly developed a method for making cetyl myristoleate in the lab by the esterification of myristoleic acid. ...

Diehl patented his discovery in 1977, receiving a use patent for rheumatoid arthritis. He then sought pharmaceutical companies to conduct human trials with cetyl myristoleate, but none were interested in his discovery. ... Diehl had made a major nutritional discovery, and no one was interested! Being a scientist, not a marketing expert, Diehl let his discovery lay dormant for about 15 years. ...

... cetyl myristoleate ... As a fatty acid ester, it appears to have the same characteristics as the essential fatty acids, linoleic and alpha linolenic acids, except stronger and longer lasting. These fatty acids are referred to as "essential fatty acids" because the human body cannot make them and we must ingest them in our diets. These EFA's truly are essential to normal cell structure and body function and function as components of nerve cells, cell membranes, and hormone-like substances known as prostaglandins. ...

The difference between the activity of EFA's and cetyl myristoleate is that the quantity required and the period of time over which EFA's are taken are markedly longer. Cetyl myristoleate is taken in a one month course of about 13 grams, while EFA's must be taken over extended periods, sometimes many years, and intake varies widely from hundreds to thousands of grams. Cetyl myristoleate seems to have properties in common with EFA's, but it acts faster and lasts longer. ...

Venous blood from the gastrointestinal tract is carried to the liver via the portal vein. With the exception of intestinal chylomicrons that enter the lymphatics, all absorbed products pass initially through the liver, and in most instances are extracted or modified before passage into systemic circulation.

Since all fatty acids enter systemic circulation through the liver, an oil like cetyl myristoleate would begin its systemic circulation from the liver also. It is speculated that cetyl myristoleate stimulates the production of immunoglobulins and series 1 and 3 prostaglandins, which could be one explanation for why cetyl myristoleate has such potent effect in auto-immune and inflammatory conditions. ...

Optimizing the Effects of Cetyl Myristoleate
Since the days of Paracelsus, physicians have been combining therapeutic agents for synergistic effects, or to achieve potentiation of several compounds. As powerful a nutrient as it is, the effects of cetyl myristoleate can be helped by combining it with other natural substances.

Two or three grams daily of omega-3 fish oil or two tablespoonfulls of flaxseed oil during the month-long course of cetyl myristoleate can help its effects.

This should be accompanied by 300-500 mg of Vitamin E daily.

A minimum of 1,500 mg of glucosamine sulfate should be taken daily for at least three months to assist in rebuilding cartilage damaged by degenerative arthritis. In severe cases, three to six grams of glucosamine daily for one month and reduced to 1,500 mg daily for three months has been found to be very effective. Afterwards, a daily maintenance of 500 mg of glucosamine should be used for healthy cartilage. If stomach upset occurs, glucosamine should be taken with meals. ...

One of the reasons that glucosamine sulfate is more effective ... is that it provides bioavailable dietary sulfur. Sulfur helps provide the protein links necessary for cartilage matrix repair. Another source of sulfur is methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), which has been used historically to treat a wide variety of conditions including allergies, emphysema, arthritis, gastrointestinal upset, and some vascular conditions. MSM is a metabolite of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and provides many similar good effects. MSM is found in most natural unprocessed foods. Because of its volatility, MSM is lost when fresh food is cooked, processed, or stored. The richest source of MSM is mother's milk; consequently, very few nursing infants are deficient in dietary sulfur.

As with any oil, cetyl myristoleate requires lipase to be digested. Lipases are pancreatic enzymes that play a key role in the digestion of fats and fat soluble vitamins. If lipase is absent or deficient, cetyl myristoleate will be poorly absorbed, if at all. As many arthritis patients are of the age when lipase production decreases, approximately 100 mg of lipase enzyme should be taken with each cetyl myristoleate capsule. In addition to taking lipase, cholecystectomy patients will need lecithin or ox bile extract to assure absorption.

Diet can play a role in optimizing the benefits of cetyl myristoleate. Carbonated cola beverages and citrus juices may block the absorption of cetyl myristoleate and should be avoided on the days cetyl myristoleate is taken. Sugar intake should be minimized when taking cetyl myristoleate, and adding refined sugar to liquids like coffee and tea should be avoided altogether. Alcohol and caffeine intake should be very limited or eliminated altogether while combating arthritis and chronic inflammatory conditions. ...

... sufferers report striking improvement with cetyl myristoleate. ... positive effect of cetyl myristoleate on emphysema, hepatitis, hypertension, diabetes, eczema, psoriasis, colds, allergies, low back pain, and headaches. These reported improvements in general health status are not surprising since each of these conditions could be associated with deficiency in the balance of EFA's.

Cetyl myristoleate is taken in a one month course.
A total dose of 12 to 15 grams appears to be indicated. ...

Sinna Nasal Spray
A.Vogel Homeopathic Remedy
for sinus inflammation and congestion.

Active ingredients: Hydrastis canadensis 6X, Kali bichromicum 6X, Lemna minor 4X, Luffa operculata 6X, Mercurius sulphuratus ruber 8X
I found this to be as immediate acting and effective as any pharmaceutical aerosol I had been directed to in time of need many years earlier. I guess there is no surprise that part of the treatment is for mercury toxicity!

COMMENT
Allergic symptoms may result from Energy Block association of substances with traumatic experiences, with cellular damage and immune compromise from parasite interference (virus, bacteria, fungus, worms, etc.), or from compromised nutrient assimilation due to organ weaknesses developed from the influence of heavy metals (including mercury) or chemical pollution (excessive concentration) in the environment.

Substances which naturally act as anti-histamines, to reduce inflammation and associated symptoms include elements which as anti-oxidants counter cellular damage, elements which detoxify heavy metals, anti-parasitic compounds, nutrients which strengthen organ function.
Vitamin C, vitamin E, sulfur, essential fatty acids, MSM, cetyl myristoleate, pancreatic enzymes, alpha lipoic acid, glucosamine sulfate, proanthocyanidins, nitric oxide (enough).

Foods which often reduce or eliminate these positive influences are those which depress, or overstimulate, organ function --- which also provide an opportunity for destructive parasite activity.
Processed foods, refined sugars, caffeine and cola drinks, alcohol, citrus, nitric oxide (too little or too much).
